Badminton is a great sport to start with - especially if you've done other sports before. Chances are you already have most of what you need in your closet.
But what exactly is the ideal clothing for a match in the Sportcenter Wittenau?
In short: wear shorts or a sports skirt (skort) combined with a light, synthetic sports T-shirt. Avoid loose jogging pants and long-sleeved shirts, as you need maximum freedom of movement. Garments made from 100 % cotton are an absolute no-go - more on this in a moment.
If you want to play regularly, investing in a few good Badminton shoes (or indoor shoes with light-colored soles) is the most important step.
The basic equipment (must-haves)
Here are the absolute basics you need for your visit to us in Berlin-Reinickendorf:
- Good sports socks: Never underestimate socks! They should be thick enough to prevent friction. Thin everyday socks quickly lead to painful blisters in badminton shoes, as you stop and start a lot.
- Shorts or sports skirt: You need legroom for lunges.
- A lightweight sports shirt: Breathability is the key word here.
- Indoor sports shoes: With a light-colored, abrasion-resistant sole (non-marking).
Our pro tip: Avoid cotton! Cotton absorbs sweat like a sponge and dries very slowly. The result: a wet, heavy T-shirt that sticks to your body and cools you down. It's better to wear functional clothing made of polyester or blended fabric that transports moisture to the outside.
What shoes should I wear?
We strongly recommend, special indoor shoes even if you are just starting out.
- Why not running shoes? Running shoes are made for forward movement. They often have a soft, high sole, which increases the risk of twisting your ankle when playing badminton (lots of lateral movements!).
- Why indoor shoes? They offer stability for the ankle, are flatter and have a grippy sole that prevents slipping.
Don't have the right shoes yet? No problem. Ask at our Counter for rental shoes or get advice on what you should look out for when buying. Important for our courts: The sole must be bright and abrasion-resistant (non-marking) to protect the soil.
Useful accessories (nice-to-have)
If you often play at Sportcenter Wittenau, these extras can increase your comfort:
- Sweatbands: Badminton is intense! Headbands prevent sweat from running into the eyes and sweatbands on the wrist ensure that the racket grip remains dry and grippy.
- Warm-up clothing: Don't arrive on the court freezing. A hoodie or training jacket keeps your muscles warm before the game and protects you from getting cold after the match.
- Hair ties: Long hair on the face disturbs the view. A simple sports hairband provides a clear view of the shuttlecock.
Is there a dress code?
If you play privately with friends, there are no strict dress code. You should feel comfortable! We only ask that you wear appropriate sportswear out of respect for the sport and other players (no jeans or street shoes please).
However, if you plan to compete in a club or tournament later on, the rules will be a little stricter (e.g. no large advertising prints, specific colors). However, the following applies to recreational fun with us: the main thing is to be sporty, clean and wear the right shoes!
Ready for the next match? Pack your bag and come by. If you are missing something (e.g. a grip tape or balls), we will be happy to help you in our store at the entrance.
