Some arrange to meet for \u201eTable tennis<\/a>\u201c, others to \u201eping pong\u201c. But isn't that exactly the same thing?<\/p>\n

The short answer is: Yes and no.<\/b> In common parlance, we mean the same sport. However, if you delve deep into the rules and history, there are fascinating differences. Here we explain what it's all about.<\/p>\n

1. the name: a question of the brand<\/b><\/h2>\n

For a long time, \u201ePing Pong\u201c was simply the protected brand name for the game. In order not to infringe any trademark rights (the rights were held by Parker Brothers, among others), the official federations founded the sport under the name \u201eTable Tennis\u201c. This is why it is now called the \u201eInternational Table Tennis Federation\u201c (ITTF) and not the \u201ePing-Pong Federation\u201c. Table tennis is the official name for the competitive sport, while ping pong remains the colloquial term for the recreational game.<\/p>\n
